“Race traitor” is defined by Wikipedia as “a pejorative reference to a person who is perceived as supporting attitudes or positions thought to be against the interests or well-being of their own race.” I heard the expression for the first time when my family moved from Chicago to central Florida when I was 17 and I went to a demonstration, as I had many times in Chicago, and was shocked to be one of the only white people as part of the pro-civil rights group and even more shocked by the venom of some other white people present. “Race traitor!” a stranger yelled at me through the
