higgs_boson_infographic.jpg
The collection of photos titled "Higgs Boson - Le Monde" [zimandzou.fr] by French graphic design office Zim & Zou was created to illustrate an article in a magazine of the newspaper Le Monde.

The depicted paper and tinfoil -based infographic artefacts each illustrate a specific characteristic of the Higgs Boson phenomenon. For instance, in one graph, colorful balloons - representing the boson - hold up other, smaller particles, to illustrate how the Higgs boson gives other particles their mass. Another photo shows a puzzle-like circle to denote how the Higgs Boson is the "final puzzle piece" in understanding the matter that makes up the universe.

null_set.jpg
null_sets [evanmeaney.com], developed by artist Evan Meaney in collaboration with the Remote Data Analysis and Visualization Center (RDAV) , consists of a collection of abstract data-based images that explore the gap between "data" and "information".

An open source, custom-made script encodes any text file as an images, in order to visualize both the size and architecture of large-scale datasets through a so-called "aesthetic lens". In theory, this algorithm thus allows for all data to be visually compared and interpreted.

Moreover, this project is described as only the groundwork for a larger project that will likely use some supercomputer in the near future...

Freelance web developer Iain Mullan has developed a map mashup titled "Johnny Cash Has Been EVERYWHERE (Man)!" [iainmullan.com].

The concept is simple yet funny: using a combination of an on-demand music service, an online lyrics catalog and some Google Maps programming magic, all the cities mentioned in the song are displayed simultaneously as they are mentioned during the song, as performed by Johnny Cash.

Styn [samvandoorn.net] is a reinterpretation of a pinball machine as a "design tool".

After a grid-like poster is placed on top of the pinball machine, players are invited to create their own, personal poster-size drawings. By playing the machine, the balls create an unpredictable pattern, which is dependent on the interaction between the player and the machine. As a result, better players can achieve better posters.

The futuristic concept Serenity [artefactgroup.com] developed by product design company Artefact consists of a collection of e-ink tablet devices that offer an information-driven view on the different aspects of a home environment.

The different displays present different environmental data variables, such as the current temperature, lighting, sound, energy consumption, device status, location, and airflow, in a rather elegant way. The visual experience presents data values, menus, and controls as art that seem to be more natural fit in a modern living environment than the typical small electronic screens of today.
