The NSF Directorates for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE) and Education & Human Resources (EHR), together with the Office of Cyberinfrastructure (OCI) recently announced a solicitation for Building Community and Capacity for Data-Intensive Research (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2012/nsf12538/nsf12538.htm?WT.mc_id=USNSF_25&WT....) with a proposal deadline of 2012-05-22. Claire Bowern has started a discussion on her blog, Anggarrgoon, about access to aggregated lexical data: how to protect the rights of the various stake holders while encouraging as much sharing as possible. I enjoyed her tongue-in-cheek suggestion that linguist-contributors should, in game-theoretic fashion, get access to data in proportion to the data they share.
The current issue of Computational Linguistics includes a review (by Eric J. M. Smith) of Vladimir Pericliev's book Machine-Aided Linguistic Discovery: An Introduction and Some Examples. The review gives a quick overview of the problems that Pericliev approaches and the techniques he applies.
